Westchester County,
It's Time to be Heard!
by Tom Bock

8th Legislative District Candidate, Westchester County

Ride to the Polls Offer

Cut The Size of Government
  •  Overlapping positions, redundancy of positions.
  •  Too many aides.
  •  Eliminate patronage positions and job bid awards.
Taxes
  •  Reduce the size of government so we can reduce taxes.
  •  Continue cutting until we can begin lowering taxes.
  •  Reduce duplicate services provided by NY State.
  •  Stop taking grant money that takes away our control.
Tax the Rich
While it sounds good on paper, it doesn´t succeed because the rich have, and very effectively use, many existing tax shelters and deductions to avoid paying taxes. But you won´t hear politicians tell the truth about it. They just keep pandering and saying, Tax the rich, and let them pay their fair share. They do. Your career politicians know it but won´t admit it: the rich currently pay the bulk of the taxes. And while they do pay, the lower and middle classes are getting hammered, making us feel like we alone are carrying the burden. That´s how bad it´s gotten. It has to change.

Cutting taxes for the lower and middle level earners, which I consider myself to be, makes more sense. Easing the tax burden on property owners is critical. The conventional-thinking career politicians believe they can increase the property taxes on homeowners without any regard for their ability to pay, even if the homeowner needs to do without, to make the payment. How ironic we never see any of our politicians, do without! This causes homeowners to forego things such as eating out, recreational events, new clothing, home renovations, new cars and in the more extreme cases, even food, heat, and especially planning for any future. So the increased taxes keep us, the average person from actually stimulating the economy. We don´t need more roads and bridges and tolls and parks and malls and apartment buildings, and retail space. We need relief from taxation! This is madness and it has to stop. You can be the change!

Residents Moving Out
At some point, a homeowner/property owner, already suffering from exorbitant utility fees, property taxes on the state, county and local levels, cannot take much more. The biggest part of their tax bill is their school district taxes. An example I always use is my own mortgage. My wife and I refinanced our mortgage to reduce the interest rate a few years ago. The government didn´t help us. There was no stimulus package or tax breaks or loan forgiveness. But while our mortgage payments are less, our tax payments have increased. Respectively, they are $900/$1200 per month. Before you start thinking I live on an estate overlooking a bird sanctuary, I don´t. I live in the Town of Greenburgh, on a busy little race strip they refuse to control speeding on, in a two bedroom, single bath, cape cod style house. And, with all the increases we are hearing about, I know that the next round of tax increases is going to make that second number rise even more. This is madness and it has to stop. You can be the change!

Here´s why your career politicians don´t care. When you say you cannot afford the taxes in your community, and the taxes go up, you still pay them! How? You give up something else so you can make the payment and just pay the taxes. But let´s say you can´t pay the taxes. Now what happens? Most people sell their homes to get out while they can and move. The key point here is someone else buys your house. The politicians don´t care who is there because somebody else purchases the house and the taxes ultimately get paid. The same thing happens to rentors as well. The taxes go up for the landlord, who´ll raise the rent, the rentor can´t pay it, moves out and someone else moves in. So, the new tenant solves the problem, until now.

Let´s look at the flip side. While the economy is tanking, instead of selling the house, the owner defaults and loses the house to the bank. The bank doesn´t get their loan paid off, the locality doesn´t get any taxes paid and the original owner, who´s had a presence in the neighborhood, is gone. The house falls into disrepair, bringing down the neighborhood. Or, squatters move in and slowly destroy an otherwise nice home. Unfortunately, the more this happens, the more our existing politicians punish the survivors, as they will force us to pay more with even higher taxes. We cannot allow our politicians to blindly continue down this path. Until we remove them, they´ll feel free to continue with the status quo, raising our taxes. This is madness and it has to stop. You can be the change!
